Here in the Sandhills, we experience all four seasons, usually the best of each and in moderation at worst. This means notably one thing: we're open all year long for golf.
Summer is golfer-friendly with long days, providing a chance to play more rounds each day. Even in winter, most courses have over-seeded their greens. This splash of color is appreciated by locals and tourists alike who wish to play during the winter months. The pine, holly, and magnolia trees add color to the setting year-round. The Winter Blahs? Not on a Sandhills area course!
The ability to golf throughout the year has brought both residents and travelers to the Sandhills. Lovers of the game have found the great climate and incredible variety of courses to be an intoxicating mixture.
The Sandhills is packed with more than 40 golf courses within a 15-mile radius...about one golf hole per 100 residents. Pinehurst and the surrounding area is renowned for its golf courses! The unique design of each course is why scores of golfers return to the Sandhills each year or simply choose to move here. The rolling hills create challenging elevations changes, while the consistently mild climate makes golfing a pleasant year-round proposition.
What type of course do you want to play? Long or short? No problem. Relaxing or challenging? It's here. A favorite golf architect? Donald Ross? Jack Nicklaus I or II? Ellis or Dan Maples? Rees Jones or Tom Fazio?
What kind of game do you have? To paraphrase a magician, "Pick a course, any course." Odds are that you'll find the perfect course here to suit your game. Enjoying a memorable round in the fresh outdoors on a Pinehurst area course makes any player a champion.
Pinehurst Resort and Pinehurst No. 2: A U.S. Open Champion
The Pinehurst Resort has eight world-class golf courses, including the renowned Pinehurst No. 2. One player during the 1999 U.S. Open Championship referred to Pinehurst No. 2 as "Augusta on Steroids."
The legendary Pinehurst. No. 2 is a challenge not because of its length, topography, unruly routing, water features or green size - but because of the combination of factors that have made thousands laugh and cry at the same time. Crowned greens. Carefully placed bunkers. Strategic layout that tests both the long and short game.
It is golf the way it was meant to be played. "The fairest test of championship golf" ever designed by Donald Ross, in his own words. It is also top 10 in the country, and site of more championships than any other course in the country. Pinehurst No. 2 is most noted for hosting the Men's U.S. Open Championship in 1999 and 2005. Several other USGA championships are coming to Pinehurst, including the U.S. Amateur. To be sure, the U.S. Open will also return for future dates.
Pinehurst No. 2 offers the perfect course to test a player's game. Golfers, regardless of their ability, will have to think about their shots, their clubs, and those infamous crowned greens. At the end of a round, golfers will ponder whether they beat the course, or if the course was the actual victor.
A major concern for the USGA was how Pinehurst No. 2 would hold up to modern technology. Would it be able to withstand the challenge by today's professionals? With lighter-weight clubs designed for longer and more precise shots and golf balls designed to travel further, could such a course hold its own? The answer has been a resounding "yes," confirming the timeless quality of this commanding layout.
All eight of the championship courses at Pinehurst have become a must-play for the world's golfing elite. Learn how you can become a member of the Pinehurst Country Club, and have access to these world class courses. To learn more about all eight of the Pinehurst Resort golf clubs, click here.

Pine Needles and Mid Pines
Home to the Women's U.S. Open Championships, the hallowed grounds and greens of Pine Needles and Mid Pines have challenged the best skills of golfers for more than 80 years. Both courses were designed by legendary architect Donald Ross.
Pine Needles - In 2004, Pine Needles underwent an extensive course restoration to recapture the challenging spirit of the original Donald Ross design. The Pine Needles course measures more than 7,000 yards in length because some holes have been "stretched to return the shot values that Donald Ross intended for this course," says Chip King, PGA, Director of Golf for Pine Needles & Mid Pines.
At Pine Needles you'll be playing your round on a rolling landscape dotted with maples, holly trees, azaleas, dogwood, blackjack oaks and loblolly pines. Although the course is always meticulously groomed, it remains naturally scattered with gentle sandy hills and hollows. You're going to find wide fairways with multi-directional slopes.
Pine Needles also offers a wonderful golf lodge and tremendous dining opportunities. For tennis players Pine Needles has several grass courts. Above all though, Pine Needles puts great emphasis on family. Peggy Kirk Bell, the matriarch of this family run resort will probably take time to speak to you during your stay.
Mid Pines - Mid Pines is a rare gem among golf clubs. It has 18 holes that are in exactly the same positions with the same numbers as when the course opened in 1921. In other words, the Donald Ross design is entirely intact.
That doesn't mean that the layout of the course has been neglected or overlooked. When the current owners took over the property in the mid-1990s, an effort was made to polish this classic gem: Tees were leveled, a pond was rebuilt and cleaned up. Irrigation and drainage were improved. Grass now glows with emerald luxuriance along the fairways.
Many people have characterized the course as "pure Donald Ross" because of how it fits the land where it was built. It has few forced carries or artificial or contrived holes. Says Lee Pace, writing about the course in Pinehurst magazine: "Mid Pines was never conceived as a daunting task to the finest players competing under championship conditions . Mid Pines was intended simply as a fun course with adequate challenge for members and guests of a private club and resort."
Even so, this course does play home to many national competitions including the 2002 USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.
National Golf Club
Nestled among the longleaf pines unique to the Sandhills, the National Golf Club boasts the area's only Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course.
This 18-hole championship layout features classic Jack Nicklaus architecture: wide fairways, lush course conditions, and undulating putting surfaces that test your mind and your true golfing ability.
"The National property is absolutely beautiful. Its rolling hills, magnificent pines and variety of lakes provided us with elements we needed to design a golf course that would be extra special. The idea has been to preserve and build upon the great golfing tradition which is the Sandhills." - Jack Nicklaus
National's golf course is a magnificent 7,144 yard course and is meticulously designed as it is compelling. An intriguingly well balanced course which, according to Golf Digest, "has come to enhance even the lofty Sandhills image for world-class golf amenities."
Each hole has been customized to create a great diversity in the way it can be played. Added to this uniqueness are tall pines, grassy swales, groomed waste areas and a natural variety of lakes and stream beds beautifully fashioned to give National its own distinctive look.

Longleaf
Nationally acclaimed architect Dan Maples created the Longleaf Golf course. It was formerly the site of Starland Farms, for years the training ground of some of the country's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute to its colorful history, Maples incorporated some of the features and flavor of the old facility into the golf course, including part of the fence, training track and old horse barn.
The front nine at Longleaf was designed in the Scottish open style with subtly rolling fairways. The back nine, in contrast, is heavily tree-lined with dramatic elevation changes. Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called Longleaf "...the most playable course in Pinehurst."
Longleaf Country Club also features a swimming pool and tennis courts. The clubhouse offers a grill room and a formal dining room. Homes, townhomes and condos are available at Longleaf, and the community is within walking distance to beautiful Reservoir Park and the Southern Pines Greenway.
Tobacco Road
Described as " Pine Valley on steroids" and "golf's rock and roll thrill ride", Tobacco Road Golf Club is certainly unique. Carving his way through an old sand quarry, Mike Strantz created one of the most celebrated and talked-about courses in the world.
Consistently rated among the nation's best, Tobacco Road is the one course that leaves you and your golfing friends begging for more. The scene is so breathtaking you will want to bring along your camera to forever capture the greatness of "The Road". Playing at a length of 6500 yards from the pro tees, Tobacco Road was rated as high as second in slope to the famed Ocean Course at Kiawah Island . Don't just take our word on how enjoyable a trip around The Road is.
