Located in Southern Pines and covering almost 900 acres of protected land is Weymouth Woods. There are many Southern Pines Homes and Neighborhoods within walking distance of the park, which is open year round for you and your children and grandchildren to enjoy. This nature preserve is home to over 160 bird species, deer, fox, squirrels and many rare and endangered species, such as the red-cockaded woodpecker. See Weymouth Woods Map.
The preserve is open to the public and used for hiking, bird watching, horseback riding and is also an educational tool to many of the local schools. There are miles of trails covered with a canopy of beautiful long-leaf pine, which are an icon of the Sandhills.
The majority of the horse farms on Youngs Road, Connecticut Avenue and the neighboring equestrian communities are only a short walk or trot away from this horseback riding sanctuary. Many of the local horse owners trail ride on the quiet and well-kept bridle paths that wind through the preserve. Weymouth Woods is in the heart of horse country and at the same time only a couple of miles from downtown Southern Pines.
Local hikers can enjoy a day hiking, bird watching or jogging through the nature preserve, while the horseback riders can enjoy a leisurely ride through the woods. Where else can you find such a peaceful, beautiful and diverse natural area that makes you think you are far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, when in fact you are only a short distance from town and horse country? It's hard to find a place where you can have the luxury of having both!
The Weymouth Woods Nature Center and public parking area is located at 1024 Fort Bragg Road , Southern Pines, NC. The telephone number is 910.692.2167.
